Questions about selling and buying
How prices are worked out, what to bring, selling by post and buying bullion and coins.
How do you work out what to pay?
We test each item to find its purity, weigh it, and work out how much pure metal it contains. We then pay our rate of that day’s spot price for the metal. The calculator uses the same method, so its estimate matches the offer when the purity and weight match.
What is the spot price?
The spot price is the market price for one troy ounce of pure metal, traded worldwide and quoted here in pounds. It changes through the day. Our prices for buying and selling are based on it.
What do I need to bring when I sell?
Photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence, and proof of address, such as a recent bill or bank statement.
Can I sell by post?
Yes. Ask for a postal pack on the Sell to us page. Send the items in it, and we contact you with an offer once they are tested.
Do you pay for diamonds and gemstones?
The calculator prices the metal only. Tell us about any diamonds or gemstones when you ask for an offer, and we look at them when we see the item.
Do you charge VAT on bullion?
Investment gold, which includes most gold bullion bars and coins, is exempt from VAT in the UK. Silver, platinum and palladium bullion carry 20% VAT, which is included in our prices.
Can I pay for bullion online?
No. Send an enquiry from the product page and we reply to confirm the price and how to pay. You can then collect from the counter or ask about delivery.
